The Risk of Asbestos
Asbestos is perceived as a health hazard and its use is now highly regulated by both OSHA and EPA. Asbestos fibers related with these health risks are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause a buildup of scar-like tissue in the lungs called asbestosis and result in loss of lung function that often progresses to major disabilities.
Here are some tips to reduce the hazards of working on the cleanup of asbestos:
- Making sure you have been properly trained for work with asbestos and understand what is required of you and the plan of work.
- Do not eat, smoke or drink in the work area.
- Use any equipment provided, including that for personal protection; ensure it is clean and in good working order.
- Ensuring asbestos waste is disposed of safely.
